MIRIJJAVILA BOTANICAL GARDEN

 Mirijjavila botanical garden is one of the five botanical  gardens in Sri Lanka. Mirijjavila botanical garden is located on the Colombo-kataragama main road. It has the Mattala international Airport on its left side and the Hambanthota Harbour on its right side.

This land was covered with thorny shrubs and abandoned chena lands, when it allocated for this purpose in 2006.Three water tanks named kohombagaswewa, Malitthangas wewa and Demataththa wewa are constructed in the garden premises to preserve the moisture of the land. The total area of the botanical garden is about 300 acres. Dry zone Botanic gardens is the largest botanic garden in Sri Lanka. Srilanka's first ever dry zone botanical gardens was opened up to the public in 2013. 

The Dry zone botanic gardens consist of plants, trees and herbal plants that are grown in the dry zone. Areas for a butterfly garden, a plant nursery, a student park, a plant conservation unit, a flower garden and ornamental bushes have been separately developed. 

With the highway developed up to hambanthota, this latest attraction of hambanthota has been a popular destination for those who travel to kataragama. This place can get quite over crowded during holidays. The walk paths inside being quite long, you can also hire a electric cart(4 or 8 seater) at an hourly rate given below. 

To reach this site from the highway, you need to exit from the sooriyawewa exit and travel towards Hambanthota Town 16km.Another New attraction close to this is the Hambanthota birds park which lies about 13km off the Botanical Gardens. 

Purpose of the Garden.... 

❤️Ex-situ conservation of dry and arid zone plants of Sri Lanka. 

❤️Dry zone landscape improvement. 

❤️Ecotourism promotion. 

❤️Providing knowledge and training on botany and floriculture. 

❤️Promoting medicinal herbs. 

❤️Studies on lesser known and under utilized plants in the dry zone.

Hambantota International Airport (HIA), also known as Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA), is the second international airport in Sri Lanka. The airport is named after the country’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa. The airport is located in Hambantota, 241km south-east of Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo, and is operated by Sri Lanka’s Airport and Aviation Services. The airport has the capacity to handle one million passengers a year and is expected to handle five million passengers, 50,000t of cargo and 6,250 air traffic operations per annum by 2028. An automated fuel hydrant system and a state-of-art aviation refuelling terminal were opened at the airport in 2014.
